It’s hard not to panic amidst the coronavirus (COVID-19) scare. You see and hear about it in the news all day. Fortunately, the mortality rate is low. Most people get to recover. But as they say, prevention is better than cure. The last thing we want is for it to continue spreading.
Tips to Protect Yourself from COVID-19
First of all, don’t panic. Panic can prove to be equally-dangerous. Here are some tips on how to protect yourself:
- Wash your hands often.
This is something that we all should do regularly anyway. But now, it’s more important that ever. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Do it every chance you get and sanitize your hands with a hand sanitizer gel in between.
- Avoid touching your face area.
Your hands get in contact with dirty surfaces. In these times, surfaces may have the virus on them. You’d be transmitting the virus into you if you touch your face because it can enter your body through your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Maintain distance from sick people.
Maintain a distance of at least 1 meter. This is to avoid breathing in droplets from coughs and sneezes that may have the virus in them.
- Sneeze and cough properly.
Common practice is to sneeze into the hands. You’d be transmitting the virus when you touch someone or something if you do this.
It’s good practice to sneeze or cough into the elbow. Better yet, do so onto a tissue and dispose of it properly and immediately.
Also, wear a mask if you’re sick.
- Know the symptoms.
The most common symptoms are fever, dry cough, muscle ache and fatigue and breathing difficulty. Isolate yourself if you have these symptoms and call your local hospital for assistance.
- Listen to local health authorities.
Listen and follow their advice. Their main goal is to contain the virus. They can only do so with the support of the people.
How to Protect Your Household and/or Office
You have to educate everyone in your household and/or office regarding these tips. Also, it’s good practice to clean your home and/or office regularly. This is especially true with areas that are often touched by people.
