How to Prepare Your Home for the Rainy Season

Well, summer went by fast. PAGASA just announced that it’s officially start of the rainy season! This means it’s time to bring out the umbrellas, jackets and rain boots! After all, we have to protect ourselves from rain.

In addition, doesn’t it make sense to make sure that our home is ready for the rain as well? After all, it protects us from the outside elements including rain. This is why we also have to prepare our home for the rainy season, and we have the tips to help you out!

Prepare Your Home for the Rainy Season

Follow these tips to make sure that you can stay protected inside your home amidst the rain:

  • Check for any sign of leakage.

Do a thorough scan of your ceiling. Do you see water marks or peeling paint? If yes, then there’s a good chance that there’s a leak. You can also use a pair of binoculars to look at your roof for signs of damage that can lead to leaks.

If you spot signs, make sure to hire a professional to take care of the issue. The last thing you’d want is to run out of buckets on a rainy night with leaks all over your home.

  • Check for gaps in your doors and windows and seal them.

Water can get into these gaps. Seal them. This is especially true if you have older doors and windows.

  • Clear your gutters.

Your gutters play an important role in driving rainwater away from your home’s foundation. When was the last time you checked the gutters? If it’s been a long time, then they’re probably clogged with leaves and debris. In this case, they won’t be able to do their job.

  • Trim your trees.

Strong rains may come with strong winds. They can easily break off branches and falling branches can damage your roof or home. This is why it’s important to trim the trees around your home.

  • Prepare your family.

It pays to be prepared. Prepare a go-bag for your family. Make sure that you have basic necessities that will last you through a storm. Be prepared to evacuate when necessary.

  • Renovate if necessary.

Your house should have overhangs. It’s also a good idea to keep the roof design simple. These tips can help keep water off of the walls.
