Important Things to Consider when Designing a Restaurant
Owning a restaurant is a dream of many people. Done right, it’s a good business, considering that it provides the most basic of needs – food. With more and more families considering dining out as a family bonding experience, it can be a very profitable and fulfilling business.
This is not to say that you can just find a space, put some tables and chairs, and open shop. It’s widely-believed that most restaurants fail in their first year. Unless you want to be a part of this statistic, you have make sure that you set yourself up for success.
The Restaurant’s Design can Turn Your Dream into Reality or Nightmare
While there are a lot of things to consider, the restaurant’s design plays a very important role.
A good design can help you achieve the following:
- You can maximize the space and accept a lot of customers at a given time.
- You can ensure efficiency in the workplace.
- You can attract potential customers into dining in.
- You can retain customers because of their amazing experience.
With these things achieved, your success as a restaurateur will be within reach.
What to Consider with the Design
Consider the following things to come up with a good restaurant design:
- The restaurant layout
So, how are you dividing the space that you have? Basically, there are 2 main spaces – the preparation/cooking area and the dining area. You have to find a balance. You can’t sacrifice one for the other. How many customers do you want to serve at a given time? Given the available space, will you have enough space for the preparation/cooking area? You can’t really decide on getting a smaller kitchen area just for you to accommodate 200 customers for maximum profit. If you do, you’ll have 200 hungry and angry customers just because your kitchen area can’t cope.
You also have to consider the washroom, storage, pantry and receiving areas, among others.
- The kitchen layout
This is very important. You have to give your kitchen staff enough room for them to work their magic. If you don’t give them enough space, the whole operation will suffer that will lead to delays and mistakes in orders.
Make sure that everyone can walk and work freely. You wouldn’t want people to be bumping into each other holding hot pans and sharp knives.
In addition, make sure that everything is within easy reach for them. You can’t afford to delay them for even just a minute just because they can’t find where the pot that they need is.
- The dining room layout
It has to be conducive to an amazing dining experience. It has to offer an experience that they’ll love and would want to experience over and over again. Obviously, this will depend on the restaurant’s theme.
It’s also very important that your diners are comfortable. You can’t have them bumping into each other. You’d have to give them enough space to enjoy their dinner with the family.
Speaking of space, the dining room staff should also have enough room to navigate around the dining area. You’ll be asking for a disaster if they can’t even walk without bumping into a chair.
- The overall restaurant design
The design should really make passers-by stop to check your place out. Know the psychology involved in restaurants and dining in general. Complement this with your own branding to come up with a good restaurant design.
